Obituary for John D. Killeen

John D.  Killeen
John D. Killeen, 71, of Enfield entered peacefully into eternal rest, on Monday May 11, 2015.
He was born in Hartford, CT on Dec. 11, 1943, the son of the late John W. Killeen and Frances V. Hero Killeen. He grew up in Uncasville, CT, summered in Groton Long Point and after making several stops along life’s path, he settled in Enfield, CT in 1967.
John spent 20 years working for the Town of Enfield holding a variety of positions including: Assessor, Town Clerk, Industrial Coordinator, acting Town Manager and Director of Planning & Development.
He was a Past President of the Connecticut Association of Assessing Officers. He was grateful to the Association for making him a life member in Nov. 2012.
John later became a principal in the firm of United Metal Working Industries, Inc. until he left in 2004. He went back to his first love and put 5 years in the Suffield Assessor’s Office, before retiring in 2010.
When he wore a younger man’s clothes he was an avid slow pitch softball player in and around Enfield. He was a Laker’s fan dating to their days in Minneapolis, a long suffering fan of the Red Sox and loved to watch the UCONN Women’s Basketball team.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years Mary Ellen (McDermott) Killeen, two sons and their spouses; John P. & Leslie Killeen of Weymouth, MA, and Michael & Maryellen Killeen of Upton, MA, five grandchildren; John A., Abigail, Madeline, Alexandra and Lily.
He is also survived by his brother Bill and a half-brother Jeffrey.
A special Thanks to the staff at the Saint Francis Cancer Center for the many kindnesses shown to John during his treatments there.
The Killeen family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday May 16, 2015 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a Remembrance Service at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels 43 Shaker Rd. Enfield. Interment will be private in the Comstock Cemetery, Uncasville, CT.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in John’s name may be made to the Mercy Housing and Shelter, 211 Wethersfield Ave. Hartford, CT 06114.
