Obituary for John J. Gabriel

John J.  Gabriel
John J. Gabriel of Enfield, CT, died on September 16, 2016, after a brief illness. He was fortunate enough to celebrate his 100th birthday on August 21st, 2016, with many loving family and friends in attendance.

Born in Bristol, CT, on August 23, 1916, he was a son of Stanislaw and Katarzyna Gabriel. He lived in Hartford until moving to Enfield 65 years ago.
John worked as a steamfitter and welder most of his life. He was a 65-year member of Steamfitter’s Union Local 777.
John was predeceased by his wife, Esther Irene (Mason) Gabriel and a son John M. Gabriel. He also was predeceased by his brother, Peter Gabriel (Meriden) and sisters: Frances Moriarty, Sophie Hayes (Hartford) and Helen Reinholtz (Rhode Island),
John leaves behind his daughters: Kathryn (James) Szynal, Atlanta, GA; Dianne (Pete) Trinque, Tucson, AZ; and Carol (Louis) Tallarita, Enfield, CT, with whom he lived for the last 12 years. He also leaves a son, Richard Gabriel, Anaheim, CA. In addition, he leaves 10 beloved grandsons: Christopher, Matthew, and Jeremy Szynal; Andrew, Eric, LTJG Adam, and Evan Tallarita; John, Robert, and Jeffrey Gabriel; one granddaughter, Michelle Trinque; 6 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many caring friends and neighbors.

John’s comedic personality, wit, and infectious laugh will be long remembered, as will his loyalty to the Boston Red Sox. In addition, he was a regular patron at the Enfield Senior Center for many years, playing cards, pool, and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow seniors. He especially enjoyed his ride to the center with his bus driver, Charlie Griffith, who made the trip so pleasurable.
John was a long-standing member of St. Patrick’s Church, Enfield.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Church on October 10, 2016 at 10:00 am followed by a private interment in Mount St. Benedict’s Cemetery, Bloomfield, CT.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, or Home & Community Health Services, Inc., of Johnson Memorial Medical Center, Stafford, CT.
