Edmond “Chetty” P. Mattarelli, 91, of Suffield, beloved husband of 46 years to Gloria Mattarelli, entered into eternal peace on January 2, 2017 at The Suffield House. Born on December 20, 1925 in Stafford Springs, Conn., he was the son of the late Artemio and Stephania (Martinelli) Mattarelli.
Chetty was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving his country during World War II on the USS Chara in the Pacific Theater. He went on to work at Combustion Engineering for 25 years as a shipping and receiving supervisor. Chetty was a lifetime member of the Suffield VFW and the American Legion.
Forever remembered for his kind and outgoing nature, Chetty loved to share stories with everyone who crossed his path. He was a skilled gardener and an exceptional cook who grew his own tomatoes and garlic for his homemade pasta sauce accompanied by his signature meatballs. Chetty was an avid football and baseball fan – a passion he shared with Gloria even though he rooted for the Yankees while she cheered on the Red Sox. Chetty and Gloria also greatly enjoyed many nights of polka dancing. Chetty was a car-racing enthusiast who fondly remembered his trips to see sprint-car races, the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR. His life’s travels included visiting the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, and his parents’ home in Fai della Paganella, Italy, and many Florida vacations. Above all, Chetty loved spending time with his family, his dear neighbors and friends, Dino Tittarelli and Mert Trowbridge; and the many dogs who shared his home over the years.
Chetty is survived by his wife, Gloria; his daughter, Donna Harnedy, and son-in-law, Brian Harnedy; his grandchildren, Kristin, Brian and Ashlee Harnedy; his sister, Anna Rosi; his sisters-in-law, Annie Forbes and Nancy Leighton; along with nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Henry, Louis and Mario Mattarelli; and his sister, Ella Tarantino.
