Obituary for Charles P. "Chick" Egan

Charles   P.  "Chick"  Egan
Charles Patrick “Chick” Egan, 95, of Enfield, entered into eternal life on Monday January 30, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to the late Jean (Smyth) Egan. Charles was born on July 30, 1921 in Lowell, MA, he was the last surviving of twelve children to the late John F. and Catherine (McDonnell) Egan. Having moved to Thompsonville at a very young age he grew up on Union St., he would proudly say he grew up in “The Ball Lot” and was a graduate of Hartford Trade School. Chick served his country proudly with the US Navy during WW II on the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa. After returning from the service he was married to Jean on Sept. 23, 1947 and raised their family in Hazardville, a loving & dedicated husband, he took care of Jean for six years before her passing in 2006. Before retiring many years ago Chick worked in various aspects of the car business. He owned and operated Egan Motors in Hazadville of which he seemed to enjoy very much, he then went on to open Egan Buick on Enfield Street and later sold many cars for many years having enjoyed working at Pierce Buick in Hartford the best. Consequently, his children heard many times from folks, “I bought a car from your father”. In his later years, he worked for 27 years with National Car Rental in Windsor Locks. After retiring he enjoyed being at home, visits from the grandchildren, reading the newspaper, bird watching, playing the harmonica & organ, a good cigar, flower gardening, collecting clocks and Polish music.
Chick is survived by his five children; Robert Egan and wife, Susan of Enfield, Charles R. Egan of Enfield, John Egan of Somers, Mary E. Egan of Windsor Locks, Marita E. Grabon & husband Lenny of Enfield, his daughter, Atty Ann Egan predeceased him in 2004, his granddaughters; Lexi Grabon and Carolyn Egan Ghio & husband Alex, three grandsons and eight great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and their families, his sisters-in-law; Sylvia Egan and Betty Smyth and brother-in-law; Bill Conley. .
Relatives and friends may gather with his family during calling hours on Thursday Feb. 2, 2017 from 9:00 to 10:30 am at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, Enfield, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 am in St. Bernard Church 426 Hazard Ave., Enfield. Interment with military honors will then take place in St. Patrick’s King Street Cemetery, Enfield. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) 26 Broadway 14th Floor New York, NY 10004.
