Born on April 5, 1923, Jean was the fourth of seven children born to the late Richard and Bertha (Crombie) Smyth of Enfield. Jean will be remembered as a smart, selfless woman who was strong in many ways. Her roots were on a farm on Hazard Ave. and she ended up just one street away on Middle Rd. where she and Chick raised their family. Her farm stories included collecting & preparing the eggs for market and peddaling milk with her father, ("hurry times a wastin”). She married Charles Patrick Egan of Hazardville at St. Patrick Church in Thompsonville on September 23, 1947. It was a Tuesday since a Saturday was too busy a day on the farm (her father said). After 20 years as a homemaker she started her bookkeeping career at her brother's restaurant, Smyth Farm Diary Bar from 1967 to 1977. Prior to her retirement in 1985 she worked at Connecticut Republicians in Hartford once traveling to the National Convention in Detroit. During their retirement years Jean & Chick enjoyed touring New England together. If she wasn't home relaxing with a good book she could be found lunching with her best friend and sister, Esther.
Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her passing five children; three grandsons, two granddaughters and one great grandson. Survivors include, Robert Egan and wife, Susan of Stafford, Charles R. Egan of Enfield, John Egan and companion, Carla Bidwell of Somers, Mary E. Egan of Windsor Locks and Marita E. Grabon and husband, Leonard and their daughter, Lexi M.
