Obituary for Benjamin W. Barksdale

Benjamin “Benny” W. Barksdale, 86, of Somers, entered into Eternal Rest on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 in the comfort of his home with loved ones at his side. Born on April 6, 1932 in New Bedford, MA to the late Grover and Bernice (Leduc) Barksdale. A graduate of Bristol County Agricultural School, upon graduation he worked on the family farm. Benny had resided in Enfield for over 20 years and in Somers for the past 30 years. A veteran he served his country honorably with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed as a Union Truck Driver for Thompsonville Distributors and retired from Franklin Distributors after many years of beer deliveries, and was Thompsonville Bowl Manager. He was a 49 years member of the American Legion Tanguay - Magill Post 80 American Legion, Enfield, having served as Sargant of Arms and with the Honor Guard, Past President of Teamsters Local 1035 and served as Tri-State Teamsters Health Fund Trustee. He loved spending time at the American Legion, gardening, watching the Boston Red Sox and Sunday dinners with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, Glenn Barksdale & wife Lori of Enfield, a longtime lady friend Shirley Cowles, step-children, Gary Rossignol of Enfield, Gail Shaw of Derry, NH, Wayne Rossignol of Tolland and Lynn Rossignol of Enfield, his three beloved grandchildren, Sara, Abbie and Kayla Barksdale of Enfield and a great-granddaughter Mila Pagan of Enfield. He is also survived by two sisters, Florence Barksdale, Ruth Barksdale and a brother Andy Barksdale all of MA, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by brothers, Grover, Tommy, John, Jack, Charlie & Ernie and sisters, Mary, Sarah, and Louise.
Relatives and friends may gather with his family during calling hours on Monday, Dec. 17, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Browne Memorial Chapels, Enfield. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 with a Service at the funeral home for 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow with Military Honors in the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Agawam, MA.
