Obituary for Catherine B. Kelly (Shields)

Catherine B. (Shields) Kelly, 93, of Sebring, FL, died January 12, 2023 at Hartford Hospital. She was the loving wife of 49 years of the late Edward C. Kelly. Known as “Kay” to her family and friends, she was born April 14, 1929, the only daughter of the late Edward F. and Barbara (Nicols) Shields. Kay was born in Jamaica, NY and grew up with her four brothers in Woodhaven, NY. Kay and Ed moved to Connecticut in 1949, living in Marlborough and East Hartford before settling in Enfield in 1958. She was employed as a secretary at Combustion Engineering, Windsor, for 20 years before retiring in 1985.
Kay was a founding member of Holy Family Church in Enfield and formerly served as a member of the Ladies’ Guild and CCD Secretary.
In 1985, Kay and Ed retired to Sebring, FL and spent their summers at Sun Valley Resort in Stafford Springs, CT. She was active in the Sebring Village Association as Bingo Chairman and editor of the monthly newspaper. She was also an active member of the Sebring Elks Lodge.
She is survived by her daughters, Major Sharon Kelly, USAF (Retired), East Windsor, CT; Corinne “Cory” Gervascio, Amston, CT; and her four grandchildren, Michael, Brian, Carmon and Laura. She was predeceased by her four brothers and daughter, Cindy Smuda.
She will be joined with her late husband and daughter in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill, CT. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Connecticut Heritage Foundation, supporting the Connecticut State Library, or Connecticut Foodshare in her memory. Browne Memorial Chapels, Enfield, CT is assisting her family with arrangements.
