Obituary for Catherine "Cathy " LaQuerre (Marshall)

Catherine Marshall LaQuerre, 92, of Enfield, CT, passed away on January 1, 2021. She was born in the village of Chryston, not far from Glasgow, Scotland, on August 27th, 1928. She grew up in Bloomfield, CT, and later lived in South Windsor, Farmington, and Burlington, CT, before retiring with her husband, Richard C. LaQuerre, to Port St. Lucie, Florida in 1992. After her husbandʼs death in 2017, she moved back to New England, where she lived at Langdon Place in Nashua, NH, before settling at St Josephʼs Residences in Enfield, CT. Cathyʼs father, Robert Marshall, immigrated from Scotland to Connecticut in the late 1920s to find work away from the coal mines of Scotland. After he found steady work at Terry Steam Turbine in Connecticut, Cathy (still an infant at the time) and her mother, Helen Barrowman Marshall, traveled aboard the SS Caledonia from Glasgow to the United States to join Robert in April of 1930. Her maiden name was Catherine Gilmour Marshall, and she received her US Certificate of Citizenship in 1949. She married Richard in 1950, and they were married for 67 years until Dickʼs death in 2017. Cathy was primarily a housewife,
but she worked part-time jobs and volunteered for charitable organizations, such as Meals on Wheels in the Burlington and Farmington area of Connecticut. Cathy was very social and would strike up conversations with folks at every opportunity. She was known to get to know people surprisingly well in places like Doctorsʼ waiting rooms and grocery stores. When one of her sons was driving her to an appointment and was pulled over for speeding, Cathy chatted up the State Trooper, who was so charmed, he reduced the ticket amount significantly just for the pleasure of talking with Cathy. Cathy also enjoyed the opportunity to travel, and loved talking in particular about the trips she and Dick took to Africa and China. After moving to Florida, both
were active in the All Saints Episcopal Church in Jenson Beach. In her later years, Cathyʼs favorite pastimes were watching Westerns on TV and talking with her children and grandchildren on the phone or on FaceTime.
Cathy was pre-deceased by her husband, Richard C. LaQuerre. She leaves three sons and daughters-in-law: Richard and Joanne LaQuerre, of Enfield, CT, David and Vicki LaQuerre, of Old Orchard Beach, ME, and Peter and Sheryl LaQuerre, of Nashua, NH; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Cathy was also pre-deceased by her brother, Peter Marshall, of Vernon, CT, and her sister, Betty Swanson, of Florida.
Cathyʼs grandchildren include Matt LaQuerre of Nashua, NH, Nick LaQuerre of Salem, MA, Sarah LaQuerre of Poland, ME, Josh LaQuerre of Littleton, MA, and Greg LaQuerre and Kim Cunningham of Enfield. CT.
The family is planning a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Cathyʼs name to the Alzheimerʼs Association or to Little Sisters of the Poor, St Josephʼs Residences. Arrangements are being handled by Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels and Cremation Services.
