Obituary for Dorothy Mae Novack

Dorothy Mae Novack was born May 12, 1933 in Teaneck, New Jersey to the late Anna and August Mergl. Dorothy was the devoted wife of 67 years of Bernard Christian Novack, who passed just ten days prior to her. Dorothy and her husband, Bernie, lived in West New York, NJ and moved to Saddle Brook, NJ where they raised their four children. They retired to Forked River, NJ in 1994, and moved to Enfield, CT in 2018. Dorothy is survived by her four children and their spouses, Linda and Stan Sikorski, Holly and David Chaffee, Diana and Rob Bennett, Thomas and Denise Novack, her nine grandchildren (Michael, Steven, Anthony, Anna, Denise, Danielle, Danny, Tori, and Dorothy) and her four great-grandchildren (Cassandra, Delaney, Alistair, and Brinley). She was also predeceased by her sisters, Helen Charles and Anna Mergl, and her brother, Charles Mergl.
Dorothy was primarily a Domestic Engineer, staying home to raise her four children, which she took great pride in. When her children were grown, she returned to the workforce as a Typist Clerk for the New Jersey Board of Social Service.
Dorothy was a true role model for her family, always volunteering for the activities her children and husband were involved in. She belonged to the Long Memorial School PTO, chairing many committees in a variety of roles; The Women’s Auxiliary of Engine Company #1 Saddle Brook, NJ; Brownie Troop Leader; Member of the Saddle Brook High School Band Booster Club; and Pioneer Girl Leader at the First Reformed Church of Saddle Brook, NJ. Dorothy volunteered with Post 517 American Legion for activities and for the Veterans at Chrystal Lake. She was also a member of the Contessa Red Hats in Forked River, NJ. Dorothy was lovingly referred to as Dot, Dottie, Dotsy, Mom, and Grandma Dot. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was known for her love of family and life-long friends, all of whom she held closest to her heart. She loved knitting, baking, cooking, spending time with her friends and family, supporting her grandchildren at their many sporting events, and the many travels she went on with Bernie.
Dorothy instilled strong values, strength, love, and the importance of giving back to the community in her children. Dorothy, Dot, Mom, and Grandma Dot will be missed by all of her friends and family, who will continue her legacy.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff from Elara who cared for Dorothy in her final months (Jackie and Ana), two special caregivers, Hebba and Kim from Helping Hands.Dot treasured her trips with her driver, Barbara from Nutmeg Senior Rides, who transported her to many appointments.
