Obituary for Luigi "Lou" Joseph Secondo

Luigi “Lou” J. Secondo, 82, of Longmeadow, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, December 23, 2021. Luigi was born on Maple Avenue in Enfield Connecticut. He spent his childhood and his adolescence in Enfield, where he was a star athlete in numerous sports; especially in baseball and football. As a teenager, Luigi formed his own band, loved to perform, and promote other entertainers. He loved music throughout his life, especially music of the 1950’s and Italian music. Luigi was inducted into the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2008 for his accomplishments. His love for athletics transcended his life. He became a coach and mentor to many young men who played on the numerous teams that Luigi, otherwise known as “Sweet Lou” assembled. Lou developed relationships with exceptional basketball coaches’ Jim Valvano, Rollie Massimino, and numerous others who he bonded with.
Luigi wore many hats during his lifetime. He owned his own tool and dye business, and he also worked hard at many other endeavors during his life. He developed hobbies that he especially enjoyed. He was an avid coupon enthusiast, cutting coupons and giving them to those in the grocery stores who needed them.
Luigi also enjoyed traveling with his family. He spent summer vacations with his family at many New England destinations, visited his wife’s family in Berlin, Germany and also loved Hawaii. Lou met many celebrities during his lifetime using his charming personality to form an instant bond. Luigi’s parents were both from Sicily. He loved his Sicilian heritage, and he often gathered with his friends in the Italian community. He enjoyed The Italian Feast in the South End of Springfield, and at the Mount Carmel Society in Enfield Connecticut, where he was a member. As his children grew older and attended college, Luigi developed an affinity for his son’s college, The Florida State University. Luigi loved the Florida State University Seminoles and coach Bobby Bowden. Luigi enjoyed going to Seminole football games in Tallahassee with his son, Sal, and cheering on his favorite college football team. Luigi was a devoted parishioner at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, where he was an usher and participated in other church functions.
Luigi Secondo went to be with his Lord and Savior after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents Salvatore and Josephine (nee Arnoni), a sister, Mary Landes (née Secondo), five brother Achille Secondo, Anthony Secondo, Frank Secondo, Joseph Secondo, and Thomas Secondo, and a sister Rose Marek (née Secondo). Luigi is survived by his loving wife Barbara Secondo (nee Hilgendorf), a son Salvatore (Cathy) Secondo, two daughters Aileen (Al) Matos (nee Secondo), Susan Secondo, fiancé Donald Barnard, his beloved grandchildren: Stephanie Matos, and Alexander Matos, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm followed by a Funeral Home Service on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapel, 43 Shaker Road, Enfield, CT 06082. Interment will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, King Street, Enfield, Connecticut.
