Robert G. Hughes, Sr., 83, of Enfield, entered into Eternal Life on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital & Medical Ctr., Hartford, CT. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Clara (Vella) Hughes. Robert was born on Dec. 21, 1934 in Indian Orchard, MA, son of the late Raymond and Irene (Bousquet) Hughes. He served his country honorably with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Prior to retiring Bob was employed with Alstom Power/Combustion Engineering after 40 years of service. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #50, Enfield, lifetime member of the AMVETS, Enfield and the American Legion Post 2016, Somers. An avid N.E. Patriots fan he loved watching games for many years. His family meant so much to him and were his pride and joy, he loved spending time with his beloved wife Clara, attending his sons and grand-sons hockey games, and watching his granddaughter Kaylee in All-Star cheer.
Besides his wife Clara, he is survived by his children; Paul Hughes & wife Jackie of Stafford Springs, Irene Murkowicz of Enfield, Robert Hughes, Jr. & wife Mary of Enfield, and Linda Webb & husband Les of Suffield, his seven beloved grandchildren; Sarah Hughes, Paul “PJ” Hughes, Matt Murkowicz, Kyle Murkowicz, Chris Hughes, Sean Hughes, and Kaylee Webb, his three cherished great-grandchildren; Sullivan Hughes, Grayson Mitchell, and Jacob Hughes.
He is also survived by, two sisters Gert Brown of Holyoke, MA, and Barbara Pagnoni & husband Ed, of Springfield, MA, a brother-in-law Fran Olier of E. Longmeadow, MA, and a sister-in-law Barbara Hughes of FL, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters Eleanor Olier and Irene Hughes, a brother Raymond Hughes, and a brother-in-law John Brown.
Bob’s family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, November 12, 2018 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at Browne Memorial Chapels, Enfield. The Mass of Christian Burial for Bob Hughes, Sr. will take place at Holy Family Church (St. Jeanne Jugan Parish) 23 Simon Rd. Enfield, interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Patrick’s King Street Cemetery, Enfield.
