Obituary for Robert Eaton Phelps

Robert E. Phelps September 3, 1944-April 23, 2021

On a day when Bob would be getting his gear ready to go fishing, he left us to fish other streams. Robert passed away peacefully in his sleep, with his wife of 52 years, by his side, in their home where they’ve lived for 50 years. In the days leading up to his passing, Bob was surrounded by the love of his family and friends, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born September 3, 1944 to the late Jasper and Irene Phelps and grew up in Suffield. He liked nothing more than to spend time with his brothers talking about their adventures growing up on Bridge Street in Suffield. He graduated from Suffield High School class of 1962 and joined the United States Air Force in 1965 to which he proudly served his country until his discharge in 1968. Bob graduated from The University of Hartford in 1979 and worked professionally in the insurance industry for 40 years retiring from Prudential Financial in 2009.
He had many hobbies including fishing, working in the yard, listening to all sorts of music genres, model trains, golfing and getting together with friends for a wee dram. He and Donna have traveled to many places in the world with their travel companions, Tom and Marilyn Baziak. If you asked him his favorite destination, he would say Maui, Hawaii.
Bob was very active in the United Methodist Church of Enfield, serving on many committees, most notably as the church Treasurer. He was involved in the Boy Scouts with his sons and served on the SHS class of 1962 reunion committee.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Donna, and his sons Timothy (Abigail) and Jason (Margot). He also leaves his brothers Brian (Joyce), Dwight (Nancy), and John (Cathie), as well as his uncles William (Alice), Bill (Kathy) and Tom (Kathy). He leaves Donna’s family: brother in-laws, Donald (Marcela), and George (Michelle) as well as cousins Mari and Mike. He also has many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. He also leaves his loving church family where he had many lifelong friends.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and medical staff that cared for Bob over the last 3 years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United Methodist Church of Enfield, 41 Brainard Rd, Enfield, CT 06082 to the Robert Phelps Memorial Fund.
A graveside memorial service with Military honors will be held on Saturday May 1, 2021 at 11:30 am in the Hazardville Cemetery, Elm St & North St, Enfield, CT 06082. We ask that you wear a mask and practice social distancing.
