Obituary for Steven A. Llewellyn
On Thursday, April 30, 2020, Steven Alwyn Llewellyn, beloved father and friend passed away at the age of 78, as a result of a recurring brain tumor. He was born on December 12, 1941, in Wales where he was adopted by Gethyn and Gladys Llewellyn. At the age of 16, he became an apprentice in Rugby, England, learning to be a machine worker and welder. He spent his days working with other apprentices, living at Coton House where he also found a group of guys to play rugby with and where he discovered his love of music. In 1967, he married Elizabeth Llewellyn and they raised two daughters. He worked at Torvac Systems in Cambridge and was provided an opportunity to work in the USA. In August, 1974, he headed to the US with his family landing in Southwick, MA. He began working at EBTEC systems as service support in Agawam MA, moving to Feeding Hills, MA, in 1975. At EBTEC, he began his career in service and sales which enabled him to work at a number of industrial laser companies through the years. He pursued an opportunity at Lumonics which led him to move to Ann Arbor, MI and it was there where he met his second wife, Geraldine Llewellyn. Over the years and as a result of a successful career, he became a respected member of the industrial laser community, culminating in his becoming a Fellow of the Laser Institute of America in 1994. In 2001, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor which was successfully removed. He then began his retirement from the industrial laser industry, taking a part time job at a local Mercedes dealership which he loved because it allowed him to indulge in his love of fine automobiles. After a recurrence of his brain tumor in 2005, he moved back to the northeast to be with his daughters in 2006. On July 4th, 2018, he realized his dream of becoming a US citizen in front of a patriotic holiday crowd, making the front page of the paper.
While you could take the boy out of Wales, you could never take the Welsh out of the boy. He loved Welsh musicians, actors and just about anyone else who he thought might be Welsh. He loved Welsh Rugby and had the experience of a lifetime when he attended the Rugby World Cup in Cardiff, Wales in 1999. He loved going back to the homeland to visit his cousins who were his closest family and who had always supported him since his days as an apprentice. In addition to numerous trips to England and Wales, he also visited many countries throughout his career, especially enjoying Japan. He enjoyed traveling with his daughters, taking several trips with them to California, Seattle, Mexico and of course, to visit family in England and Wales.
He enjoyed reading books – a good spy novel or mystery. Some of his favorite authors were Robert B Parker, Tony Hillerman, Eric Van Lustbader and John Le Carre. As much as he loved books, he adored music and was known to sing out loud to the embarrassment of his daughters. In his later years, it was quite easy for almost any conversation to trigger a song lyric that would cause him to break out in song. His favorite musicians and groups included John Denver, Peter Paul and Mary, The Kingston Trio, Harry Belafonte and Max Boyce (Welsh comedian and singer). He always enjoyed spending time with his girls, going to the movies and hanging out with his grandpuppies. While always a lover of sweets, his favorite items were orange soda, Kit Kats and Friendly’s black raspberry sundae, hot fudge, extra cherries and no whipped cream. He enjoyed catching up with his friends and anyone else that would like to carry on a conversation. He was also known for his great sense of humor, his love of building things including woodworking, and his devotion to his daughters.
He was predeceased in death by his parents, Gladys and Gethyn. He is survived by his daughters, Anne and Judy. He was a smart, kind, fun-loving man who will be remembered by many for always loving to tell a story.
A Memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 2:00pm at Browne Memorial Chapels. The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 1:00 pm until the time of the service.
