Obituary for Susan M. Delaney (Browne)

Susan M. (Browne) Delaney
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Susan Mae (Browne) Delaney at the age of 76. Cherished wife of William Delaney, Susan died peacefully on Good Friday 4/7 at Hartford Hospital with family by her side. Sue was prepared for her journey home to see her parents that she loved so much, Andrew and Ernestine (White) Browne. She succumbed during this third battle in her valiant war against cancer.
Sue was born with a twinkle in her eye in Springfield, MA on October 15, 1946, to her forementioned parents, Andrew and Ernestine Browne. She was raised in the Thompsonville section of Enfield on the Alden Avenue Browne homestead with her older sister Rita. Surrounded by adoring cousins on both sides of her family, Sue grew to appreciate and enjoy family and friends at an early age. This became the guiding force of her entire life.
Sue attended St. Josephs School and then graduated with high honors from Enfield High School in 1964. Upon graduating, she briefly worked at Aetna Insurance Company in Hartford, CT. It was during this time (1966) she was introduced to William Delaney, a Vietnam War Combat Veteran. She had known of Bill at EHS and had a bit of a crush. Mutual friends introduced them at a donut shop and the rest is history. A rich and fulfilling life they would lead.
Married in 1967 and living on Russell Street, Sue had her first son, William Jr. in 1968. Bill and Susan moved to Silver Lane in 1973 with newly born son Michael in tow and it was there they remained for nearly 50 years. Silver Lane was a fantastic and unforgettable neighborhood where young families moved in and became each other’s extended families and lifelong friends.
She began a nearly three-decade long career at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston in Windsor Locks by working nights about 5 hours a week. In time, Susan would become an Operation Manager of the facility. In her typical superhuman fashion, Susan never missed any of her sons’ school or sporting events and always demanded that, when possible, her family sit down and eat one of her many (and I mean many) wonderful dinners with dessert of course. She loved to cook and bake for others and most of her recipes are legendary.
In retirement, Susan and Bill enjoyed many trips with their friends and family to Maine, Myrtle Beach, Florida, and the Caribbean. Susan also went on to establish a network of friends through the love of music and live performances. She travelled extensively with this group and had a blast dancing with her friends and singing along with the artists.
Perhaps the greatest gifts in her life were her grandchildren, Sarah, Andrew, and Ryan. Anyone who knew Susan realized she was born for this important role, and she lived up to all expectations. She enjoyed everything about being a grandmother and loved the kids with every inch of her huge heart.
Susan’s Catholic faith was very important to her. She was a long-time parishioner of Holy Family Church. Susan was devoted to the Virgin Mary, Saint Anne de Beaupre, and St. Patrick.
Along her journey Susan made so many friends and had so many laughs. She relished in small pleasures, but she also savored the grand. She loved her family beyond condition. Her positive outlook to make the best out of any situation was infectious. Her warm spirit and sentimental heart impacted people in times of sadness and joy. She simply loved life. She was our center. Our rock. Our North Star. We will live by her example, and she will live in our hearts forever. Rest easy Mom.
Susan was predeceased by her loving aunts and uncles and her wonderful parents. She is survived by her husband William, her sons and their wives, William (AnnMarie) and Michael (Susan), her grandchildren Sarah, Andrew, and Ryan, her sister Rita, and many, many friends.
Family and friends will meet for a visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 AM on Saturday April 15, 2023 at Browne Memorial Chapels, Enfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in Holy Family Church, (St. Jeanne Jugan Parish) 23 Simon Rd. Enfield, CT at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow in St. King St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Enfield.
