Obituary for Thomas Ernest "Tom" Wright

Thomas E. Wright, 80, passed away in Longmeadow on Wednesday, July 6, surrounded by his family.
Tom was born in Springfield and attended local schools. As a youngster, he was the “altar boy that lived
next door to the church” and participated as a regular server for many occasions at St. Mary’s Church in
East Springfield (now known as Mary, Mother of Hope parish). As an adult, he continued his service to
the church serving as a Lector, Religious Education instructor and Minister of Communion at St. Mary’s
Longmeadow.
Tom was a graduate of the High School of Commerce and American International College with further
study at Western New England University. Tom was a teacher at numerous locations. His longest and
final teaching assignment was with the High School of Commerce. He also had worked as the Business
Manager for the former Cathedral High School.
Tom played Varsity baseball at Commerce and was a member of the AIC baseball team. He was
formerly the baseball coach at Commerce and a youth baseball coach for many years for Longmeadow
Little League and Babe Ruth League teams. He had the pleasure of coaching hundreds of players over
the years. He was most proud of his Little League team that went 18 and 0. His coaching background
included baseball, soccer, and basketball for both boys and girls.
Tom loved sports, coaching, and family. He was an avid New England sports fan particularly for his
beloved Red Sox. He had a deep knowledge and passion for the game. He was known to have a
quick wit and great sense of humor. He loved attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events and
was a mentor to many.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Robert E. and Mary E. Wright and his brother, Robert J. Wright.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 56 years, Kathleen (Griffin) Wright and their four children,
Michael (Amanda) of Chandler, Arizona; Daniel (Elizabeth) of Longmeadow; Timothy (Victoria) of
Longmeadow; and Ellen Rosemond (Michael) of Springfield as well as their ten grandchildren—
Eric, William, Edward, John, Sophia, Timothy, Margaret, Thomas, Sean, and Mary
Catherine.
Calling hours are Monday, July 11, 2022 from 4 pm to 7 pm at Browne Memorial
Chapels, 43 Shaker Road, Enfield, CT. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will
be celebrated Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Church in Longmeadow. Please go
directly to the church for the celebration. Interment will follow in Longmeadow Cemetery, Longmeadow, MA.
