Obituary for Walter Thomas Landry

Walter (Hack) Landry, a lifelong resident of Enfield, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Baystate Hospital at the age of 101. He was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend of over 60 years, Alva A. (Lakonski) Landry, in 2018. He leaves behind his three daughters and their families: Shereen Landry; Celine Peach and her husband Jeff, and their two children Macy and Jeffrey; and Gayle Odell and her three children Jake, Sam, and Max. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son-in-law Lemuel Odell.

Walter was one of 10 children born to Camille and Beatrice (Gaudet) Landry. He was a graduate of the Enfield schools. He was a WWII veteran and served in the US Navy as a gunner’s mate on the attack cargo ship USS Thuben in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. The USS Thuben received 8 battle stars during WWII. After the war, Walter was employed at Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Company for 29 years until its closure in 1971. Later, he worked for the US Postal service as a clerk until he retired at the age of 65.

In his retirement years, Walter enjoyed attending church services, walking for exercise, reading, and Friday night card games with his friends. He also enjoyed Sunday night jazz get-togethers with Shereen, playing cribbage with Celine, and Scrabble with Gayle. However, he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. He rarely missed any of their games. Walter was an avid sports fan and he could recite statistics of players back to the 1940s. He was a big fan of baseball and college basketball, with the Mets and Duke being his favorite teams.

Until his passing, Walter was blessed to have been able to live at home under the care of his loving and compassionate daughters. He lived a very long and fulfilling life with friends and family and surely will be missed by all who knew him.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 10:00 at St. Patrick’s Church 64 Pearl Street, with interment will follow at St. Patrick’s King Street Cemetery, all in Enfield. A celebration of Walter’s life will be held at a later date in the summer. Browne Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Raymond of Peñafort Parish, 64 Pearl St, Enfield, CT 06082 or the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1365 Enfield St., Enfield CT 06082.
