Isabelle “Is” (Lockwood) Spanswick, 101, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Lawnwood Hospital in Ft. Pierce, FL. She was born on June 27, 1916 in Hazardville, CT to the late Police Chief Charles E. Lockwood and Emma (Bernier) Lockwood. Isabelle lived most of her life in Enfield, CT where she loved living on Cottage Green and retired to Hutchinson Island, Ft. Pierce, FL in 1983, with her husband Harry who she was married to for 64 years. Isabelle was a graduate of Enfield High School, Class of 1934. She was formally employed by the Bigelow Sanford Carpet Mill and R.E. Phelan where she retired in 1983. Isabelle enjoyed knitting, playing bingo, jigsaw puzzles, reading, rides in the car, hosting family Thanksgivings and Christmases, making her famous mini mincemeat pies, watching the Red Sox, golf, tennis and western movies. She spent many summers renting cottages on lakes where she would enjoy spending time with her children and grandchildren. Isabelle always said she wanted to be the longest living person in her family and she exceeded that by 9 years.
Isabelle was predeceased by her loving husband William “Harry” Spanswick who passed away in March of 2002, her brother, Bandleader Theodore Lockwood in 2000, her son-in-law Raymond J. Vane in 2013, brothers-in-law John “Cliff” Spanswick in 1993 and Robert D. Olthoff in 2016. She is survived by two sons, William H. Spanswick Jr. and his wife Bonnie of Naples, FL, son James R. Spanswick of Enfield, CT, and two daughters Barbara S. Vane, with whom she resided, of Enfield, CT and Ft. Pierce, FL and daughter Nancy L. Spanswick and companion Mike Sirois of W. Suffield, CT and Ebeemee Township, ME. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Marjorie Olthoff of Clemson, SC and former daughter-in-law, Patricia Spanswick of Enfield, CT who passed away peacefully this week. Isabelle also leaves 12 grandchildren Darci, David, Heidi, Danny, Shelley, Linda, Susan, Billy, Bobby, Heather, Jimmy and Jeff; and 9 great grandchildren, Mak, Emma, David, Julia, Matthew, Tyler, Jack, Ethan and Jillian. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss her deeply.
A wake will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels in Enfield, CT from 4-7 for both Harry and Isabelle. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 10am at St. Patrick’s Church followed by internment at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Thompsonville.
